Why is Valentines Day Celebrated?

Before knowing why people celebrate the day, lets first understand what is valentines day. St Valentine’s Day is the day of love. It is an annual festival celebrated around the world to celebrate romantic love, friendship and admiration for each other. Each year on 14 February people celebrate this day by expressing their love and affection to partners, family and friends. Couples send Valentine’s Day cards, messages, chocolates, flowers, greetings to each other and spend some quality time together to admire their love and affection for each other.

Talking about the history and origin of valentines day, it goes long back in the 3rd century. There are many legends behind the story of valentines day. So, there was a Catholic priest named Saint Valentine. During his time, it was forbidden for lovers to marry according to the king, who used to think that marriages would create bad soldiers. St. Valentine helped the people in love to marry each other secretly and live happily.

Soon the king came to know about this and St. Valentines was imprisoned and was ordered execution as punishment. He was executed on 14th February. After 200 years later 14 February was proclaimed as St Valentine’s Day. He became a sign of great love and affection. People used to remember the day as a sign of love. Since then it became a ritual in Europe and spread in the whole world as a day of love. Since then 14th February is celebrated as Valentines Day. How did Valentine’s Day develop through Years?

People started sending love messages to each other to express their love and affection. They used to make handmade cards and write their personal emotions about their love and give it to them. The senders used to decorate the card with pictures, and drawings of flowers, hearts, ribbons, cupids as the symbols of love. And this became the norm throughout the years. People used to decorate cards and give them along with chocolates, flowers and gift to their lovers. Starting from the Rome and Europian countries, it rapidly spread to the entire world. Valentine’s day became the official day of love.

In this technologically advanced world, now people share their emotions and feelings via a smartphone and Internet. people send messages, texts, pictures, songs, videos about valentines day to each other via social media and emails. Technology has definitely brought the world closer but the human touch to communication has lost.
